Helicopter Crew Course

UK HEMS is a non for profit charitable organisation that offers tailored training for doctors, paramedics or nurses wanting to practice prehospital care with in the helicopter environment. The back bone of this training is the Helicopter Crew Course or HCC.

This course comes in 3 modules that can be taken as individual modules or as a whole month long course.

Module A - The Aviation Module

The aim of this module is to prepare paramedics, nursing, medical and tri-service medical personnel to apply Health and Safety legislation within a helicopter emergency service (HEMS).  The focus of this module reflects the Health and Safety legislation requirements as applied to HEMS crew members.  The module is assessed through a short answer examination reflecting the core content and helicopter emergency and survival as a pass/ fail component.

 
Module B - Multi Agency Working

This module aims to develop an understanding and the ability to function within a multi-disciplinary team approach to pre-hospital care.  This module involves working with the Mountain Rescue, RAF, Search and Rescue, Police, Fire and Ambulance services to develop a co-ordinated approach to pre-hospital care.  The module aimed at preparing a HEMS crew member to work in partnership with other emergency services using a co-ordinated approach to pre-hospital care. This module is objectively assessed by using a multi-agency scenario to enable the student to demonstrate a co-ordiniated approach to pre-hospital care


Module C - 1. Clinical Skills for Medical Practitioners

 The aim of this module is to prepare medical personnel to carry out safe and effective clinical care within a helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS).  The focus of this module reflects the clinical skills required to practice within the pre-hospital environment, caring for acutely ill patients in a variety of hazardous environments.  This evidence based module is a combination of lectures, tutorials, moulages and time on medical simulators.  As well as bringing candidates the latest developments in pre-hospital clinical care, it also develops knowledge and skills in relation to scene management, scene safety, trauma epidemiology, major incident management, media training and ethics and law.  The module is assessed through simulation/ OSCEs and a  MCQ paper.

Module C - 2. Clinical Skills Paramedics

The aim of this module is to prepare personnel to assist medical practitioners to carry out safe and effective clinical care within a helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS).  The focus of this module reflects the clinical skills required to practice within the pre-hospital environment, caring for acutely ill patients in a variety of hazardous environments.  This evidence based module is a combination of lectures, tutorials, moulages and time on medical simulators.  As well as bringing candidates the latest developments in pre-hospital clinical care, it also develops knowledge and skills in relation to scene management, scene safety, trauma epidemiology, major incident management, media training and ethics and law.  The module is assessed through simulation/ OSCEs and a  MCQ paper.

In addition, all medical crew members undertake a specific two day pre-hospital anaesthesia course.
